Elastomers are commonly used for seals in hydraulic cylinders, but in the marine environment, specific elastomers with enhanced properties are required. Fluoroelastomers, such as Viton, are highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including seawater and hydraulic fluids. They can withstand high temperatures (up to around 200°C in some cases) and have good mechanical properties. However, they are relatively expensive.

Nitrile rubber (NBR) is also used, especially in less - demanding applications or in combination with other materials. NBR has good resistance to petroleum - based hydraulic fluids and is cost - effective. However, its resistance to seawater and high temperatures is limited compared to fluoroelastomers. To improve its performance in the marine environment, NBR can be blended with other polymers or treated with special additives.
